名詞構文（S+V+O) -- for 目的語 + of(by) 主語 or 所有格主語 --

今回は、for の後ろに意味上の目的語をとるパターン (demand, love) をみていきます。

google 検索でヒット件数を参考にします。

 

1. Women demanded the right to vote. （女性たちは選挙権を要求した）

    〇women's demand for the right to vote （7,310件)

    ×the demand of women for the right to vote （7件）

    ×the demand by women for the right to vote （6件）

    ×the demand for the right to vote by women (0件）　

      以上から、demand は意思をともなう行為なので所有格主語をとると考えられます。

 

2. A mother loves her child. （母親はわが子を愛す）

    〇a mother's love for her child (564,000件)

    〇the love of a mother for her child （193,000件）

    ×the love by a mother for her child （9件）

    ×the love for her child by a mother （0件）

    *love の場合は、of 目的語も可能なので

　 〇a mother's love of her child （35300件）

    ×the love by a mother of her child （0件）

    というパターンもOKのようです。
